According to the GNU Autoconf Portable Shell Programming manual, the Bourne shell does not systematically split variables and back-quoted expressions, in particular on the right-hand side of assignments and in the argument of 'case'. The change is made automatically using the following command: $ sed -E -i 's/(\<case )"(\$[^"]+)"( in\>)/\1\2\3/' config.guess * config.guess: Simplify case commands by removing quotes around the argument.
